3D Printing

DESY is a partner in the newly established industry-science network "3D-Druck Nord"

The network to promote 3D printing and additive manufacturing in the Hamburg metropolitan region is back in a new set-up. DESY acts as the central partner from research.

DESY, FEHRMANN Tech Group, Fraunhofer IAPT and IHK Lübeck are now joining forces in the network "3D Printing North" to meet the growing potential of 3D printing and its rapid development. The network has been initiated by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce under the name "3DMRHH" in 2018 and is now back with a new name and under new administration, but with the same objective after the pandemic-related break. The stated goal: to enable exchange, bring science and companies together, launch innovations and increase the visibility of the Hamburg metropolitan region as a leading international lighthouse in the field of additive manufacturing. Other supporters are Handelskammer Hamburg, Technikzentrum Lübeck (TZL), Handwerkskammer Hamburg, Industrieverband Hamburg (IVH) and Fraunhofer IMTE who are getting involved with events and are supporting the development of the 3D printing network in the extended circle.

Dr. Arik Willner, Chief Technology Officer at DESY, says: "We are pleased to be part of the network to further advance the mass production capability of 3D printing together with partners from industry and academia. With our unique large-scale research facilities and our excellent scientific competencies, we aim to provide crucial elements for the industrialization of 3D printing and develop new concepts, especially in the field of quality assurance."

"The trend towards the use of 3D printing is unbroken. As a flexible, resource-saving production technology, 3D printing is increasingly becoming established, particularly in product development, small series, spare parts and wherever weight and individualization play a major role. The Hamburg metropolitan region has always been one of the world's leading 3D printing locations thanks to Airbus, SLM Solutions and Fraunhofer IAPT. To play a leading role worldwide and to implement the technology in more and more companies, it is crucial that we continue to bundle our competencies in a network despite all the diversity", says Henning Fehrmann, Managing Director of the FEHRMANN Tech Group and spokesman for the network.

The network offers members and interested parties a varied range of onsite events and digital workshops. Through professional impulses and the exchange of experiences among each other, answers to practical and strategic questions will be given: What is the potential of 3D printing technology for my company? How do I integrate 3D printing technology into existing company processes? Which scientific partners can support me with technological solutions?

News from the network can now be found on the LinkedIn channel „3D-Druck Nord“ (German only). In addition, every 3rd Tuesday of the month at lunchtime the webinar series „3D Printing Tuesday“ provides new impulses by experts from the field of additive manufacturing.
