The Next Sciencepreneurs

CAROTS Startup School class of 2022 started

The CAROTS 2.0 Startup School successfully launched on Wednesday 18th May, 2022.

The 11 participants of the Start-up School met with their CEO coaches and Pegram Harrison, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford who is facilitating the webinars, for the first time online to launch the programme. The first webinar focused on the entrepreneurial mindset. The team was also joined by members of the Advisory Committee - Barbara Diehl, Chief Partnership Officer, Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIND), Julian Alexandrakis, Innovation Officer at the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft and Reinhard Hahn, who passes on his knowledge and expertise to young companies via the association "Wirtschaftssenioren beraten".

For the second run of the Startup School, 11 teams from Germany, Finland, France, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, & Cyprus were selected by jurors. They all have scientific backgrounds in Physics, Astrophysics, Material Science, Chemistry, Data Science, & Biotech. They have experience in advanced analytical methods, are interested in bridging the gap between science and industry and are playing with the idea of becoming a “sciencepreneur” by turning their scientific skills into a business. And, last but not least almost half are female scientists.
The business ideas they applied range from Physical Chemistry, Plasma physics, Photonics, and X-ray Optics to Material science, Biotechnology, and Artificial intelligence.

The Startup School participants will now receive four webinars and two personal coaching sessions as well as access to a network of successful scientific service companies via the MIXN network. The focus of the CAROTS Startup School lies in practical knowledge transfer. Complimenting this knowledge transfer the programme is facilitated by Pegram Harrison, Senior Fellow Entrepreneurship, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford and Charlelie Jordan, Communication Strategist.

To this end, six experienced founders and CEOs of successful scientific service companies will share their knowledge with the Startup School participants in facilitated webinars and 1-to-1 coaching sessions from May through to the end of October 2022. After completing the programme participants will pitch at a virtual event in front of industry and scientific experts.

The CAROTS Startup School was piloted last year and was a success in founding two new companies. The success of the school led to a continuation in 2022. It was initiated with the aim of expanding the market of scientific service companies. The programme wants to help remove thresholds to the creation of scientific service companies by transferring entrepreneurial knowledge to scientists.

The programme is organised by the DESY Startup Office and sponsored by DESY Innovation Factory and the Helmholtz Society.
