DESY welcomes QBN: Expert workshop on the future of quantum computing
The Quantum Business Network (QBN) and DESY have invited to a workshop at the Bahrenfeld research campus to discuss the latest developments and applications of quantum computing.
On October 29th and 30th, 2024, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY will host the workshop “WG Quantum Computing & Applications: Use cases in Key Verticals” organized by the Quantum Business Network (QBN). The event brings together experts from the academic and industry communities to discuss the latest developments and potential applications of this pioneering technology.
The workshop will focus on the latest developments and practical applications of quantum computing in key industries such as logistics, aerospace, energy, materials science, and the development of new algorithms. The event aims to promote the exchange of knowledge between research and implementation and strengthen collaboration within the quantum computing community.
DESY plays a central role in research and development with and for second-generation quantum technologies. The research center focuses on four areas: Quantum Computing, Quantum Materials, Quantum Control, and Quantum Sensors. In addition to quantum computing, the focus of this event, there is a particular emphasis on research into quantum materials, which could serve as the basis for future quantum technologies. DESY's large-scale research facilities make it possible to investigate materials at the atomic level and to develop and standardize tailor-made solutions.
Helmut Dosch, General Director at DESY, explains: “Quantum technologies expand our DESY strategy for excellent research and development. With our unique infrastructure, such as the PETRA III storage ring X-ray light source and, in the future, PETRA IV, we can make a significant and leading contribution to harnessing and further developing the potential of these novel technologies.”
Kerstin Borras, Senior Scientist and Head of the Quantum Technology Initiative at DESY, explains: “We are excited about the new possibilities that quantum technologies offer us. They open up new tools for experiments that we have never even dared to dream of before. Our research in quantum computing ranges from innovative algorithms for solving complex and computationally intensive problems in basic research to concrete applications for industry and society.”
The event underlines DESY's central role in the quantum ecosystem of the Hamburg metropolitan area. DESY promotes the development and knowledge transfer of quantum technologies through close cooperation with the Hamburg Quantum Innovation Capital (hqic) coordination office set up by the Hamburg Senate and through contacts with universities, research institutions, and companies.
DESY's quantum portfolio offers enormous potential for collaboration with industry, the development of new business models, and the founding of start-ups. This promotes a vibrant innovation ecosystem in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld as well as at the DESY site in Zeuthen in the Brandenburg/Dahme region and Berlin.
QBN is the innovation network for quantum technologies in Europe and Germany promoting growth acceleration, collaboration and the trialogue between industry, science and politics. As One-Stop-Shop for quantum vendors, facilitators and end-users, QBN establishes quantum for good to tackle global and societal challenges.
