Milestone

New Design Possibilities for Compact Accelerator Plasma Cells

Only a couple of months after its’ start, the SPLASHH-Project achieves the first milestone by designing a demonstrator for a new plasma cell design to be used in compact accelerators.

The first demonstrator outcome in the SPLASHH-Project, a joint initiative by DESY, Fraunhofer IAPT and the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) aims to advance the development of compact particle accelerators using 3D printing. The first developed demonstrator is a plasma cell to be used in the compact accelerator. Accomplishing the technical challenges successfully, this demonstrator illustrates the design possibilities of the plasma cell for the compact accelerator while showing the ability of copper being processed via 3D-printing. For this application, copper was the material of choice, due to its efficient thermal conductivity and cooling characteristics.

This demonstration is an important indicator for combining the selective laser etched plate with the copper holder. Furthermore, it is also an important step in advancing the development of compact particle accelerators using 3D printing. The demonstrator will be on display at the Formnext exhibition on the Fraunhofer IAPT booth until Friday, November 18th 2022.

The SPLASHH project is funded by the Authority for Science, Research, Equality and Districts (BWFGB).
