Room for Ideas

DESY Innovation Factory: Makerspace Starts Regular User Operation

The Makerspace by the DESY Innovation Factory has expanded its capacity since its soft opening in November 2022. Now, a wider user community from the innovation ecosystem in Hamburg will be able to explore new ideas, build prototypes, and benefit from the makerspace’s potential.

The Makerspace provides fully equipped experimental areas for innovative projects to enable them to develop prototypes, work on proof-of-concepts, and validate ideas by providing access to facilities for 3D printing, mechanics, and electronics. The offer is completed with co-working and office spaces.

The Makerspace by the DESY Innovation Factory is operated by the Start-up Labs Bahrenfeld. Membership is available from 80 Euros per month plus a flat charge for consumables. It is located in the DESY Innovation Village on campus and is another touch point for innovators in the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. It is open to all users with ideas or projects rooted in deeptech.

The Makerspace is a testbed for the DESY Innovation Factory, which is scheduled to open its doors in 2026. Besides office spaces and event areas the integrated technology and start-up incubator will offer a tailor-made, highly standardized laboratory infrastructure for applied research and pre-founding projects, start-ups, and established companies in the life science and new materials sectors. The DESY Innovation Factory is funded by federal resources and the City of Hamburg.
