Room for Ideas

DESY Innovation Factory: Makerspace opens for users

The Makerspace creates an initial offering by the DESY Innovation Factory for application-oriented, pre-foundation and cooperation projects as well as start-ups, an offering on campus that complements the research infrastructure and gives users the opportunity to explore new ideas or build prototypes.

The DESY Innovation Factory is the integrated technology and start-up center, which will be built on the DESY campus. At its core, the DESY Innovation Factory will accelerate pathways of innovative deep-tech products and transfer projects from basic research to application. The DESY Innovation Factory will act as a hub between the scientific community on campus, applied research, start-ups and established companies. From 2026, cooperation projects, pre-start-ups and start-ups originating from or contributing to the life sciences and new materials sectors will find space and a suitable laboratory infrastructure in the DESY Innovation Factory.

Testing Ground

The Makerspace serves as an initial testing ground for the DESY Innovation Factory, where these objectives are already being put into practice at a smaller scale. "DESY has the social mandate to shape innovation and the transfer of insights from this very science in such a way that they can be applied for the benefit of all. For this reason, it is our goal to offer a holistic solution ecosystem. The Makerspace, as the first facility of the DESY Innovation Factory, represents an important milestone in this regard," Arik Willner, DESY’s Chief Technology Officer, explains why the opening of the Makerspace is an important step.

The Makerspace of the DESY Innovation Factory is operated by Start-up Labs Bahrenfeld, the innovation center of DESY, the university and the city of Hamburg. It is open to everyone interested in founding a company, start-ups and young companies from the deep-tech sector that correspond to the research fields of the campus. The offer includes equipped workspaces for polymer 3D printing, mechanics and electronics as well as co-working office space.
Membership is available from 75 Euros per month plus a flat charge foe materials. Interested parties should contact: makerspace@slb.hamburg
