DESY and Fraunhofer intensify their collaboration
Making better use of existing research infrastructure for a wide variety of problems faced by industry, speeding up innovation cycles and strengthening the cooperation between application-oriented and fundamental research. These are just a few of the reasons why DESY and a number of Fraunhofer institutes are striving for closer cooperation.
DESY and Fraunhofer Intensify Their Collaboration
Closer cooperation: At a first meeting in October between DESY and 15 different Fraunhofer institutes, the focus was placed squarely on how the large research facilities and innovation-generating infrastructure available at the DESY campus in Hamburg can be better utilised by the different institutes of the Fraunhofer Society and which joint synergies might be achieved.
In the future, a wide range of research questions and the corresponding analytical methods are to be optimally linked. This will allow the large research facilities at DESY, in particular the X-ray light source PETRA III, and in future PETRA IV, to be used to gain a better understanding of applied research questions, perfectly complementing the laboratory resources of the institutes themselves. Other campus partners on the research campus in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld are also involved in the discussions, including the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Helmholtz Centre Hereon.
In a first step, the needs and the questions being studied by all the participating Fraunhofer institutes are now being collated; these will serve as a basis for defining concrete projects and experiments at PETRA III, so as to get started as soon as possible.
