DESY and Class 5 Photonics side by side develop new laser system

The "Supernova DFG" laser is intended to make laboratory examinations, especially for non-invasive diagnostics, more precise and faster with a 20-fold/ 20 times improvement in efficiency. Thus, Diseases such as cancer, lung diseases or poisoning can be detected more quickly.

Current laser systems do not offer the necessary efficiency to reliably conduct complex investigations of vital molecules such as proteins or DNA. The Supernova DFG should exactly offer this efficiency. To achieve this point, the researchers are looking over new optical crystals and creating novel laser architecture. The project is funded under the "PROFI Transfer Plus" program of the Hamburg Investments- and Förderbank (IFB). Class 5 Photonics will establish the Supernova DFG on the market under a DESY license after series production, which is planned for the end of 2020. The company expects that this product alone will increase sales long-term by up to 47 percent and that 12 new employees will be hired. The collaboration with the experts of the DESY group "Femtochemistry and Cluster Physics" under the supervision of Tim Laarmann makes a decisive contribution to this ambitious development goal.
